Anti-Diabetes Properties of Mangosteen
Mangosteen is currently being studied by several medical research facilities including the National University of Singapore and J. Med Association in Thailand. These two research facilities are placing an emphasis on diabetes research in an effort to prove that Mangosteen or Mangosteen juice can help reduce symptoms experienced by patients with Type II diabetes.
According to the Singapore study, G. Mangostana OPCs, which are found in Mangosteen fruit are “56 times more effective in inhibiting” glucose, maltose, starch, and glycogen. The study shows clear indications that if you eat the fruit or drink juice made from it, that your body is less likely to form a protein enzyme called alpha-enzyme. This is the enzyme responsible for glucose production.
Patients with Type II Diabetes suffer from improper uptake of glucose. A person with Type II diabetes has an insulin resistant body, meaning your pancreas overproduces insulin, but the body is not able to get rid of it. Without proper insulin, your body is unable to keep your blood glucose levels in the normal range. If you have a compound in your body that is able to inhibit glucose formation, then you are able to keep your glucose levels in a normal level.
The studies are still fairly new. You do not want to stop taking your medication for Type II diabetes; however, there is hope that natural fruits and other foods could be a remedy, a cure, for your diabetic issues.
According to the Thai study, there is long-term supplementation using Alpha-mangosteen that could help with hyperglycemia and insulin resistant Type II diabetes. The study assessed patients with a high fat diet. The study’s objective was to show the effects of alpha-mangosteen in patients with Type II diabetes and hyperglycemia. The conclusion indicates there are anti-hyperlipidemic effects and increased insulin sensitivity, which help improve the beta-cell functions in Type II diabetic patients. There were also anti-hyperglycemic properties.
This second test was conducted over 8 and 40 week periods, with two groups. These groups had increased fasting blood glucose tests, where one group was checked to see if reducing insulin medication and adding mangosteen helped. The other group was the control.
The conclusion based on these two studies, is a patient with Type II diabetes is likely to see an improvement in their health by introducing mangosteen to their diet through juice or the fruit. It is also possible in coming years for diabetic medication to switch to a more natural supplement containing the alpha-mangosteen properties as a way of treating Type II diabetes.
The studies have not been conclusive on Type I diabetes. Patients will want to manage their diabetes based on their doctor’s instructions; however, asking about mangosteen and starting drinking the juice can be helpful if your doctor gives you permission.
You may also want to try drinking the juice and have frequent blood glucose tests to see if there is an improvement in your numbers, while maintaining your current medicine regime. There are benefits of mangosteen juice beyond the insulin and glucose regulation discussed in the studies. Mangosteen juice has been studied for weight loss, which is often a cause for a person to have Type II diabetes. You may find at least a benefit of weight loss if you drink mangosteen tea for weight loss.
