Eating well can help to get your mind and body in tip-top shape, but there are many other ways you can improve your well-being and emotional health. In Britain, the New Economics Foundation (NEF), published a report to show that the state of your overall well-being and happiness can have a major impact on whether you do or do not feel good about yourself and your life.
We both know that the key to happiness isn’t just about healthy living and emotional health. However, both are most definitely great areas to focus on if you’re looking to achieve long-lasting inner satisfaction. NEF’s in-depth report contains five ways to well-being that are based on sufficient evidence to prove they can make a real difference to most individuals.
I have summarized each of the five keys that help bolster your well-being and mental health and added suggestions as to where you can start to quickly address changes into your everyday life.
- Connect with family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours
Build relationships with the people around you and invest time connecting with people at home, work and in your community. A great level of social support and encouragement is essential for your happiness and emotional health, even if it’s just from a handful of individuals. I’m not talking about a large volume of close connections. Have people around you that matter and enrich your life. You can even set yourself goals associated with relationships to improve well-being.
- Adopt an active lifestyle
You and I both know that regular physical activity offers many benefits. From going for a long walk and participating in outdoors sports to taking a fitness or dance class, there are hundreds of ways you can be active. Regardless of your age, high levels of physical activity can make you feel good about yourself, as well as protect you from all kinds of health problems. Even a 10-minute exercise session every day can have a positive impact on both your physical and mental health.
- Start being curious
It may not sound like an obvious one, but being curious and engaging with your environment is a key way to promote well-being. Whether it be a stroll through the park or eating dinner with a friend, pay attention to how you think and feel about the things happening around you. Practice mindfulness and be aware of what your mind tells you. You’ll feel more in control about what you like to do, meaning you can relax and enjoy being you more, as well as your life experiences.
- Learn new things
Whether for work or leisure, learn new skills. Perhaps sign up for that cooking course you’ve been thinking about or try your hand at painting. When you expose yourself to new learning experiences, you’ll discover what you’re really good at, and feel better about yourself. Education courses are also an excellent way to make you more confident and socially active, and can result in you meeting people with similar interests to you. Setting goals for yourself will boost your feelings of well-being.
- Do acts of kindness
One of the best ways to improve emotional health, happiness, and well-being is doing something nice for someone else. However big or small the act of kindness, it will always be rewarding. Give someone your seat on a crowded train, volunteer your time to a charity or simply smile at the stranger you pass on the street. When you commit to an act of kindness at least once a week, you will become much happier over time, and even inspire and motivate others to do the same.
Regardless of your lifestyle and situation, all five of these steps are easily achievable. You don’t have to rush out and do them all at once. Start and continue at your own pace to notice an improvement in your overall health and happiness, as well as your sense of fulfillment. Are you ready to achieve your happiness and well-being goals?
